Ethics In The Media
Aaargh! Pirates! ( and the press)
Summary: The Music Industry has been having issues with music leaking and illegal downloading since June 1999. Media Outlets like Rolling Stone and Billboard cover all the music drama, when they cover stories about music being leaked , they always give people a link to go download the music illegally. This Story questions Rolling Stone And Billboard on whether or not they should stay out of the drama and keep quiet.
Opinion- In my opinion, I think that these news sources should be reporting these music incidents, but they should never include the link to download anything illegal. If you give a link to people , they will be downloading the wrong thing and that is never right to promote music that wasn't supposed to be released yet. As long as they only cover the story then I think it's ok for them to publish their article.
The Media's Foul Ball
Summary: The Chicago Cubs were Five outs away from advancing to the World series, then someone in the outfield caught the foul ball. When the guy in the outfield caught it, outfielder Moises Alou couldn't catch the ball, which prevented the Cubs from advancing on to the world series. At first the media left the man unknown but then became recognizable from the televised replays, by the time they were covering the story the knew his name, where he lived, and where he worked.
Opinion- Since this game was such a big deal, I think that the story is ok to cover and go over what happened. I think the media took it to far by putting his personal information, like where he lived and worked. I think putting his name could be ok but now this guy is going to be getting a lot of hate and now people will know where to go when they want to talk to him or be mean to him.
Naming Victims Of Sex Crimes
Summary: This story covers multiple stories of multiple sex crimes that released names. The big story covering Elizabeth Smart and abduction in 2002, the story talks about what she went through on a daily basis and also what happened after she was saved. These stories are all about graphic subjects like rape, murder and abduction The author questioned whether the children's names should be in the media and out there for the world to know.
Opinion- I think it is only ok if the kids are ok with their names being in the media. Also this story is this child's story to tell, if they want to tell their story then focus on the story not the name of the child. Most of these stories involve underage kids , whose names should ever be on the internet. These Victims are young kids who have gone through a lot and the last thing they need is to relive their horrible experiences and having everyone know what happened.
